Privacy Policy

The short version

YapSpan (the iOS app and yapspan.com, operated by Bitsof, LLC) estimates your biological age and life expectancy from lifestyle quizzes so you can build healthier habits. We store what's needed to make that work: your account, your quiz answers, and (only if you opt in) daily health summaries. We never sell your data, we never use it for advertising, and raw Apple Health samples never leave your phone. The AI coach is powered by a third-party AI, and we ask for your permission before your first message is sent to it.

What we collect and how

• Account information (name, email) when you sign in with an email code, Google, or Sign in with Apple. If you use Apple's Hide My Email, we only see the relay address.
• Your quiz answers and results, which you type in yourself: for example birth date, sex, height and weight, smoking, alcohol and other substance use, sleep, exercise, diet, stress and mental health questions, blood pressure and cholesterol, and family health history. We use them to calculate your scores (biological age, life expectancy estimate, marker scores, likely causes of death) and keep your score history.
• Family members you choose to add (relation, age, and health conditions you enter), used only to adjust your own estimates.
• Daily Apple Health summaries, only if you turn on Apple Health sync (details below).
• AI coach conversations: the messages you send, the coach's replies, and reminders or to-dos the coach sets up for you.
• Settings and activity, such as whether the death-age display is on, streak and points history, and usage counters that enforce fair-use limits.
• Leaderboard handle, only if you join the optional leaderboard (ages 16+). Other people see your handle, real age and biological age. Nothing else about you is shown.
• A push notification token, if you allow notifications, so reminders you ask for can be delivered.
• Feedback and newsletter: anything you send through the feedback form, and your email if you join the newsletter.
• Usage analytics: which screens and features you use, app version, device model and OS version, linked to your account. We use this only to understand and improve YapSpan.

On the website, quiz answers you give before signing in stay in your browser's local storage until you sign in and choose to save them.

How we use it

• To calculate and show your estimates, scores, and progress.
• To run the AI coach when you use it.
• To send reminders you asked for.
• To keep your data in sync across your devices.
• To understand which features help people and fix what breaks.
• To answer your support requests and feedback.

Apple Health data

Apple Health sync is optional and read-only. If you grant access, YapSpan reads sleep, exercise minutes and workouts, steps, resting heart rate, heart rate variability, weight, BMI, height, waist size, blood pressure, blood glucose, and alcoholic drinks, and summarizes the last 30 days on your device into one value per metric per day. Only those daily summaries are uploaded, to answer your quiz questions with measured data. Raw, intra-day samples never leave your phone.

• Health data is never used for advertising, marketing, or data mining, and is never sold or shared with data brokers.
• If you have agreed to use the AI coach, the coach can read your daily summaries to answer your questions (see below). That is the only third party that receives them.
• The app never writes anything to Apple Health.
• Health data is not stored in iCloud.
• You can revoke access at any time in iOS Settings > Health.

AI coach and voice mode

The coach is powered by a third-party AI. Before your first message, the app asks for your permission and nothing is sent until you agree. Your choice is saved on that device, and you can stop at any time by not using the coach.

When you send a message, it goes with the context the coach needs (your first name, quiz answers, scores, and, if you synced Apple Health, daily health summaries) to OpenRouter, which routes it to the AI model provider that writes the reply (currently xAI's Grok). When the coach looks something up, it sends only a short search question to an OpenAI model with OpenRouter's web search. These companies process the data to generate the reply under their own API terms and privacy policies. We don't send them your email, and we don't allow any of it to be used for advertising.

Voice mode is optional. While it is on, your speech streams to our voice server, which sends the audio to Deepgram for live transcription and sends the coach's reply text to OpenAI to be read aloud. Our server does not store audio. Deepgram processes the audio under its own terms, which may include keeping it for a limited time to improve its models.

Who we share data with

We only share data with the service providers below, only what each one needs to run its part of YapSpan. Each is bound by its own privacy terms to protect the data at least as well as this policy does, and none may use it for advertising. We don't share personal data with anyone else unless the law requires it.

• Clerk (Sign-in and account management): Name, email, and your Google or Apple sign-in identity.
• Convex (Our database and backend): Everything listed under "What we collect" that syncs to your account.
• OpenRouter, and the AI model provider it routes to (currently xAI, maker of Grok; OpenAI for web-search questions) (Generating AI coach replies): Your coach messages and the context the coach needs to answer: your first name, quiz answers, scores, and, if you synced Apple Health, daily health summaries.
• Deepgram and OpenAI (Voice mode only: speech-to-text (Deepgram) and text-to-speech (OpenAI)): Your voice audio while voice mode is on, and the text of the coach reply read aloud.
• PostHog (Product analytics): Which screens and features you use, app version, device model, OS version, your account ID, name and email.
• Expo (Delivering push notifications you turned on): Your push token and the text of the reminder.
• Notion (Our internal feedback inbox): Feedback you send from the website, with the name and email you choose to include.
• Vercel (Hosting the yapspan.com website): Standard web request data such as IP address and browser.

What we don't do

• We don't sell your data.
• We don't show ads or share personal data with advertisers.
• We don't track you across other companies' apps or websites, and the app contains no advertising SDKs.
• We don't use your health data for anything except the features you see.

Not medical advice

YapSpan estimates are for reflection and entertainment only. They are not medical advice, a diagnosis, or a prediction of any individual outcome. The research behind the numbers is listed on our Sources page.

How long we keep data

We keep your account data for as long as your account exists. Voice audio is not stored on our servers. Feedback and newsletter emails are kept until you ask us to remove them. Analytics events are kept by PostHog under its standard retention period.

Your choices, rights, and deletion

• Delete your account any time from the Profile tab in the app, or your profile page on yapspan.com. This permanently removes your account and all synced data from our servers: quiz answers, scores, family members, health summaries, chat history, reminders, points, leaderboard entry, and feedback linked to your account. Your name and email are also removed from our analytics profile.
• Withdraw consent: turn off Apple Health in iOS Settings > Health, turn off notifications in iOS Settings, leave the leaderboard from its screen, turn off usage analytics in the app's Profile tab, or stop using the coach.
• Access or correct your data in the app, or email us to exercise any of these rights, including a copy of your data.

Children

YapSpan is not directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect their data. The leaderboard is limited to people 16 and older.

Changes

If we change how we use your data, we'll update this page and its date, and ask for your permission again where the law or App Store rules require it.
