Why preventive care matters
Why it matters
Many of the conditions that shorten life are far more treatable when a screening finds them early. Removing polyps at colonoscopy halved colorectal cancer deaths [1], and breast screening cut breast cancer deaths by about 20% [2]. General health checks on their own did not lower mortality in trials, so it is the specific screenings that count [3].
