Fall prevention
From the YapSpan Longevity Wiki · Updated 2026-09-28
Fall prevention is the set of measures used to reduce the number of falls and fall-related injuries, mainly in adults aged 65 and over. The main approaches are exercise that trains balance and strength, changes to the home, review of medicines, treatment of eye problems, and multifactorial programmes that assess and address each person's individual risks.
Falls are the leading cause of injury-related illness and death among older adults in the US. In 2018, 27.5% of adults 65 and over living in the community reported at least one fall in the past year, and in 2021 an estimated 38,742 deaths resulted from fall-related injuries [1]. In the first three months after a hip fracture, older women have 5.75 times and older men 7.95 times the mortality (death rate) of people of the same age without one [2].
Exercise has the strongest evidence. A 2019 Cochrane review (an independent review that pools trial results) of 108 randomised trials (in which participants are assigned to groups by chance) found that exercise reduced the rate of falls by 23% [3]. Vitamin D supplementation did not reduce falls in a meta-analysis (a study that pools the results of earlier studies) of 37 trials [4].
- An estimated 38,742 US deaths resulted from fall-related injuries in 2021 [1].
- Mortality in the first 3 months after hip fracture was 5.75 times that of matched controls (people of the same age without a fracture) in women and 7.95 times in men [2].
- Exercise reduced the rate of falls by 23% across 59 randomised trials, about 195 fewer falls per 1,000 people a year (high-certainty evidence) [3].
- Home safety assessment and modification reduced the rate of falls by 19% across 6 trials [5].
- Vitamin D did not reduce falls across 37 trials with 34,144 participants (relative risk 0.97, essentially no change in risk; 95% confidence interval, the range of plausible values, 0.93 to 1.02) [4].
